What is Trauma?

Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape or natural disaster. Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical. Longer term reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships, and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea.

There are three main types of trauma: acute trauma ( a single incident), chronic trauma (repeated or prolonged trauma), and complex trauma (exposure to varied and multiple traumatic events).

Symptoms of Trauma

- Shock, denial, or disbelief

 

- Confusion, difficulty concentrating

- Anxiety and fear

 

- Guilt, shame, self-blame

- Withdrawing from others

- Feeling sad or hopeless
